Omiyage

Posted by Nicole (Komono, Japan) on 2 June 2008 in Miscellaneous and Portfolio.

Your Japanese lesson for the day... omiyage pronounced like "oh me yah gay" (which sounds quite funny all on it's own) means souvenirs. However in the US souvenirs are usually bought for one self. In Japan Omiyage are compulsory presents that must be bought for your coworkers and friends when you go on a trip. I've actually seen Japanese people pay hundreds of dollars on these snacks and things. This is why at most main train stations snacks are sold in nice boxes with things traditional to that area... because last minute shopping is done at the station.
