Japanese Pearl DiversPosted by Nicole (Komono, Japan) on 5 March 2008 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio. In a city called Toba there is an island called the "Mikimoto pearl island," where quite obviously there are quite a few pearly for sale. In addition to a rather extensive gift shop, the island also houses a museum for everything pearl and a platform to watch demonstrations of pearl divers. Apparently Ama pearl divers wore white to ward off sharks and keep from getting stung by Jelly fish. Ama divers train since elementary school in order to reach depths needed to harvest pearls and other sea creatures good for eating such as sea urchins. Prints are now available for purchase!! I am in the process of uploading photos to the above site to be available for purchase. If there is any specific image that you would like to become available, please feel free to contact me. Thank you for stopping by!
