Sake Barrels and Mom

Posted by Nicole (Komono, Japan) on 25 January 2008 in People & Portrait and Portfolio.

So up until recently I always assumed that the sake barrels on display at shrines were in fact filled with sake. Turns out that they are actually just empty. And in fact, sake is not even stored in wooden barrels because it ruins the taste. An frequent article in the Japan times called the "So, what the heck is that" addresses such things as empty sake barrels at shrines and the hilariously baggy trousers that construction workers wear. http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/ek-wh-all.html It came to my attention recently with mom's visit that there a lot of things about Japan that I don't understand but haven't attempted to find out the reasoning behind. Ultimately this has led to those days where I find my self getting angry at Japan's "backwardness." Getting a few of my questions answered has been helpful as well as entertaining =).
